I first became involved with community cinemas through Cinema For All's Launchpad coaching program. I was passionate about bringing non-English language films and films by women and non-binary filmmakers to my local community, but I lacked the projection equipment, licensing knowledge, and safeguarding expertise to make it happen. The Launchpad program provided me with the tools and support I needed to get started, and I am now proud to be a part of the vibrant community cinema movement.
One of my favourite community cinema experiences was our collaborative screening project with POSK Cinema and Pendle Social Cinema. We screened Agnieszka Holland's film Mr. Jones across all three venues simultaneously, connected our audiences via video call, and even received a special message from Agnieszka Holland herself, who spoke about the importance of community cinemas. It was truly a unique and special event that I will never forget.
