Episode 1: Online Film Clubs
Co-hosts Abi and Jaq make the best of their home studio set-up to discuss how cinemas and community cinemas are reacting to the health crisis through the creation of online film clubs and watch parties – featuring call-in clips from Magic Lantern Film Club, Film Unit, Deptford Cinema, Bird & Cage Cinema, The Regal Cinema and Godalming Film Society, who share with what their closed-door film screenings have been like. They also catch up about which films they’ve been watching recently (Bacarau, The Bodyguard, Old Boy, Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2, Existenz and Cruising).
Episode 2: Digital Releases During Lockdown
Co-hosts Abi and Jaq broadcast from home again as part of our mini-series on cinema life during lockdown. This time, they discuss how film distributors are are reacting to the health crisis through VOD releases and filmmaker watch parties – featuring call-in clips from Altitude Releasing, Violet Pictures, Mubi and Jon Seal the director of The Teachers’ Protest. We also hear from Leigh Film Society about their DVD drop off service, which is helping their community stay connected, and Cine CCC all the way in Chile! They also catch up about which films they’ve been watching recently (The Servant, Wild, Good Time, Wild at Heart and Red Dragon) and generally have a Laura Dern love-in.
Minisode 1: Sam Riley, Radioactive and Women in STEM on Film
Producer Jay catches up with Sam Riley (Control, Brighton Beach, Maleficent), the star of the new British feature film Radioactive.
Episode 3: Programming in the Dark
Jaq and Abi discuss how film exhibitors put together programmes of films, without necessarily having access to all of the resources they usually do. They also chat about what they’ve been watching over the past few weeks (Multiple Maniacs, Circus of Books, The Lovebirds, Wadjda, Apple Mortgage Cake).
Episode 4: Curating MUBI with Chiara Marañón
Abi and Producer Jay sat down (virtually!) to chat with the wonderful Chiara Marañón, MUBI’s Director of Content. They talk about MUBI’s unique approach to programming, including the importance they place on exploring the context around the films they showcase. As well as this, Jaq and Abi catch up on what they’ve been watching (The Roads Not Taken, Showgirls, The Watermelon Woman, Reality Bites).
Episode 5: Back to the Cinema!
This is a special episode of the Cinema For All Podcast, because for the first time since March, Jaq has ventured into a cinema! She took her trusty podcast recorder in order to share the experience of a socially-distanced screening of Bong Joon-Ho’s Memories of Murder. As well as this, Jaq and Abi catch up on what they’ve been watching since the last episode (Boxer, This Is Paris, Akira, A Nightmare on Elm Street).
Minisode 2: Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project with Matt Wolf
Abi chats with director Matt Wolf (Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell) about his new film Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project. Marion Stokes was an activist, who between the years of 1975 and 2012, recorded thousands of hours of television, creating a unique archive which has now been digitised.
Minisode 3: Farewell Amor with Ekwa Msangi
Abi talks to writer and director Ekwa Msangi all about her beautiful debut feature Farewell Amor, the story of a family from Angola reuniting in New York. They also chatted about what inspired her to become a filmmaker, and the unique perspective she brings to the film.
Episode 6: S.O.U.L. Fest Takeover
We have a special episode for you today with a takeover from our friends at S.O.U.L Fest. S.O.U.L. Fest (Screening Our Unseen Lives) is a month long celebration of Black British talent in film, showcasing new work by Black British film creatives – allowing opportunities to see a diverse representation of Black Britain. The festival is the result of a collaboration between four organisations who serve Black audiences and talent: The British Blacklist, The New Black Film Collective, We Are Parable and S.O.U.L Film. We are so excited to hand the microphone over to hear all about their how they navigated 2020, and their amazing plans for reaching audiences. Many, many thanks to our wonderful friend Priscilla Igwe for organising this take over, and to Nuru Rimington-Mkali for their production work on the S.O.U.L Fest segment, as well as everyone involved in this takeover episode.
Episode 7: Producing Jamie with Cat Marshall
An interview with Producer extraordinaire Cat Marshall, who has worked on such incredible films as ’71, Yardie, and the upcoming musical extravaganza Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, as well as TV series such as This is England ’90 and The Virtues. Cat shares with us what it’s like to be a female producer, the producers she looks up to and what it was like to create Everybody’s Talking About Jamie here in Sheffield. Also, after a long break from chatting about film together, Abi and Jaq share what they’ve been watching at home over the last few months, including Thief, Demolition Man, Minding the Gap, Grease 2 and what Abi has been watching online at BFI Flare.
