Cinema For All's South West Group Viewing Day
Written by Brian Clay
The South West Group had a very successful Viewing Day in March at The Space Theatre in Taunton, hosted by the local Taunton Film Society and neighbouring North Curry Film Club. Sixty committee members from 17 Societies previewed six new releases in the Theatre and Studio at the venue as possible titles for next season. They also enjoyed a freshly cooked pizza for lunch and some fabulous cakes for tea!
Three of the films were new additions to Cinema For All’s Booking scheme: the droll Finnish comedy Fallen Leaves, an inventive French comedy-thriller The Innocent, and the moving Typist Artist Pirate King from the British director Carol Morley. Also screened was Past Lives, which was nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, and is available from Filmbankmedia, the independent British film Scrapper and The End We Start From starring Jodie Comer.
The films were all well received, most being rated over 80.0 (8.0 on the IMDb scale), with Past Lives coming out on top with 90. The full results were:
This was the 95th Viewing Day organised by the volunteers of the South West Group, the second after the Covid lockdown, and was only possible because of the hard work of the host Societies and the financial support of Cinema for All. It is clear that those attending the event were pleased to see the revival of the Viewing Days. However, future events will depend on other Societies volunteering to be hosts. The Group Treasurer, Andrew Fairhurst, is hoping to hear from Societies who are willing to step forward; he can be contacted on andrew@fairhursts.org.
