Dementia friendly relaxed films at Ropetackle, Shoreham by Sea
In 2019, a grant from Film Hub South East enabled Ropetackle to start showing dementia-friendly Relaxed Films. Five years later, and with the support of several charities and individuals, we are celebrating this milestone. These matinee films feature high musical content and subtitles. The first film, Mamma Mia, attracted an audience of just six. However, by the spring of 2020 we were averaging 25 attendees, and today we regularly welcome 45 people. The growth has been remarkable.
For many people, cinemas are a significant and constant feature in life. From their first family trip to the big screen as a child, to seeing latest blockbusters with friends as a teenager, to discovering independent arthouse cinemas as an adult, to taking their families to enjoy a film. Film is always an immersive experience, which leaves a profound and lasting impact on an individual each time they visit. It can promote activity and stimulation of the mind, can be an important tool of reminiscence, and is associated with relaxation, engagement and, above all, enjoyment.
Creating a social space where those affected by dementia can enjoy a simple leisure activity with their loved ones is so important and helps to create a more inclusive society for all.
Ropetackle Art Centre has proudly held the title of the first Dementia Friendly Venue in the Adur district, a recognition awarded by the Alzheimer’s Society. Our commitment to creating a welcoming environment for individuals with memory loss or dementia has been unwavering. This is evident in our selection of films that are not only entertaining but also serve as a bridge to cherished memories, featuring vibrant music, dance, and colour. Classics like Singin’ in the Rain, Gigi, and Summer Holiday, have been among our recent screenings.
The success of these relaxed and friendly films is a testament to the collaborative effort between Ropetackle and the Alzheimer’s Society, which has supported us in training volunteers, guiding us in creating a dementia-friendly environment, and promoting these special screenings.
Our relaxed and friendly film screenings are designed with our audience’s comfort in mind:
- Lights and Sound: We keep the lights dimmed and the volume down to create a soothing atmosphere.
- Space and Movement: The auditorium’s layout offers ample space, encouraging attendees to move, dance, or sing along.
- Social and Supportive: An interval allows for refreshment and social interaction, enhancing the communal experience.
- Accessibility: Easy access and clear signage ensure a smooth experience for everyone, with staff and volunteers ready to assist.
We welcome all in our community to join us for these special screenings. It’s more than just watching a film; it’s about creating moments of joy and connection, reinforcing the notion that art and entertainment should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their challenges or circumstances.
Defeating dementia won’t just happen in a lab or care setting, we need a step change. The way people think, talk and act about the condition throughout the whole of society has a role to play.
