New Films:

A Common Crime (2020, cir. Francisco Márquez) Drama/Thriller

Progressive sociology teacher Cecilia misses a chance to save a young man in trouble. Haunted by his spirit, she tries to manage to continue on with her own life—but it appears that she, herself, may be the ghost.

An ambitious, chilling ghost story layered with psychological observations of the politics of fear.

Effie Gray (2014, Richard Laxton) Historical Biography/Period Drama

When Scottish painter Effie Gray becomes the wife of distinguished writer John Ruskin, it soon becomes apparent that Ruskin regards her as a muse rather than a wife, and the stifling atmosphere of their home soon takes a toll on Effie’s health.

A British biographical film written by Emma Thompson, with a strong cast led by Dakota Fanning. A feminist tale of a woman caught up in an impossible situation.

Song Without a Name (2019, dir. Melina León) Drama

Peru, at the height of the political crisis of the 1980s. A woman enters a clinic offering free care to pregnant women. After giving birth, they refuse to tell her where her baby is. Determined to find her daughter, she seeks the help of journalist Pedro Campos.

An original, highly emotional film that combines dreamlike storytelling with striking visual beauty.

★★★★★ “This is a work of singular delicacy, starkly beautiful… and profoundly sad”—Erlingur Einarsson, Total Film

The Offering (2020, dir. Ventura Durall) Drama/Thriller

Jan, a character marked by guilt, will try to recover the love of Violeta. He will do so through a complex and sickly plan, twenty years after the events that caused their separation.

An elegant, atmospheric neo-noir whose deftly-portrayed characters are driven by obsession and desire.

Underground (2020, dir. Sophie Dupuis) Drama

Maxime is a miner with a troubled past. After an explosion at his mine, Maxime attempts to find redemption by saving his fellow miners.

An independent, artful explosion film that puts human drama ahead of the action of disaster, exploring themes of guilt and masculinity.

Don’t miss Underground at the Community Cinema Conference in November!

Verdict (2019, dir. Raymund Ribay Gutierrez) Drama/Crime

Joy lives in Manila, with her six-year-old daughter Angel and her abusive husband, Dante. When Dante harms their daughter, Joy begins a strenuous campaign for justice. Unfortunately, the institutions designed to protect her are stacked with patriarchal challenges.
